Minnesota Fishing Q & A

Q: When can I fish?

A: You can fish spring, summer, winter and fall. Any day of the year as long as the fish can be caught legally that day.

Q: What can I catch?

A: Some fish can be caught year round (Crappie, catfish, sunfish, perch and bullhead) Walleye, northern pike and bass would be considered gamefish so check your regulations at the particular lake, river or stream as this will vary.Trout fishing is also regulated so again be sure to confirm the regulations.

Q: How can I fish?

A: You can fish with a line from a fishing pole as long as the water is not frozen. When the water is frozen you may use 2 lines, which do not have to be attached to a pole. If you have a line in the water you must be present. Spear fishing, bow fishing and netting is allowed in some places so be sure to check the regulations for the lake, river or stream you will be fishing in..

Q: Where can I fish?

A: You can fish in any of the lakes, streams or rivers as long as you are not trespassing on private property. Some areas may be posted with restrictions so access is usually marked. Always check regulations if not sure..

Always check with the DNR Information Center if you have any other questions.
